Night guards (occlusal splints, orthotics)

Night guards (occlusal splints, orthotics)

Night guards are splints made of thermoplastic material that assist the jaw joint (TMJ) in reaching the most desirable position, so that the chewing muscles will become more relaxed and unable to exert the magnitude of harmful force.

They are commonly used to protect the teeth during grinding or clenching, and to increase longevity of dental restorations. In patients with porcelain dental restorations, night guards are recommended to protect opposing natural dentition from excessive wear, to protect porcelain restorations themselves when they oppose each other, and to provide a degree of protection to the TMJs. They are also useful in the treatment of TMD.

The procedure is very simple. During the first visit your dentist will take an impression (“mould”) of your teeth. This impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where a custom-fit night guard is made. On your second visit your dentist will show you how to place it into your mouth and will adjust it to your bite.

  • Place the appliance under warm running water for 30 sec to soften the material.
  • To remove, pull down evenly from both sides. Clean the night guard with a soft toothbrush and some mouth rinse (Listerine or Scope) in the morning. Do not use toothpaste. Store dry.
  • Bring the appliance with you to check-up appointments for evaluation and professional cleaning.
  • It is common for 1st time night guard wearers to experience excessive salivation for about a week. This will go away. While rare, symptoms of pain or soreness may also develop in jaw joint after use. If this occurs, discontinue use and contact our office.
